Stephen Thurston Trio
Colorado Native Stephen Thurston returns from Los Angeles to reunite the trio with Patrick McDevitt and Alejandro Castaño. As a trio, these three have played in various configurations since they were teenagers, giving them the sort of musical connection that only can come from sharing years of life together. Now, years later, Stephen has developed more experience and leadership as a musican. You can expect a diverse rage of music and a unique concert as they prepare to record their first album.
Stephen Thurston is a pianist and keyboardist based in Denver, CO. Hailing from Boulder, CO, he began the piano at a young age and started playing jazz in high school. He went on to study music in college, earning a BM in jazz piano performance from the Thompson Jazz Studies Program at the University of Colorado-Boulder in 2013. As a student, Stephen had the opportunity to perform alongside several Jazz legends including Maria Schneider and Dave Liebman, as well as local artists Ron Miles, and Jayme Stone. Stephen has performed all over the country as well as internationally. He is one of the most active musicians on the Denver scene, and is featured as part of Jazz 89.3 KUVO's "30-Under-30" series. He was involved as a house band member in the Hump Day Funk Jam, as well as the B3 Jazz Project. Currently performs every week with "Jalbatross" featuring Ryan Jalbert of the motet, and every Wednesday hosts the open stage at Herbs bar in Downtown Denver. He also plays in "Funko Moderno" with Art Lande, an old friend and teacher.
Stephen Thurston, Patrick McDevitt, and Alejandro Castano have been playing together in various forms for over 10 years. Their music is deeply rooted in the jazz tradition, but incorporates other styles such as blues, funk, gospel, afro-cuban, and soul. They first began playing together as teenagers at the Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts (CCJA). The relationship grew during their college years at the University of Colorado in Boulder, during which time they formed the band "Free Bear", which featured now NYC based saxophonist, Danny Meyer. After Danny's departure, the trio continued to perform in many different configurations existing mostly as a "for hire" unit that could adapt to any setting. Now based in Los Angeles, CA, Stephen brings a newfound influence of pop, rock, and jazz fusion back to Denver for an exciting set of originals, and some classics arranged for trio.
